This is a unique instance - one of the world's first pocket lighters, patented in 1890, even before the invention of flint. Spark in it made a special tape to fulminate Pistone (rattlesnake acid salts), and with its help ignited gasoline soaked wick.

This lighter works on catalytic principle discovered by the German chemist Johann Wolfgang Dёbereynerom in 1823: immersion frames with balls of platinum black on the wires to the department with felt impregnated with methanol, platinum causes a chemical reaction, heat and ignition of methanol vapor.
